The Makhtesh Ramon in English Ramon Crater is the world’s largest erosion crater. It is located in the middle of the Negev Desert, at the peak of Mount Negev, some 85 km south of the city of Beer sheva It is the world’s largest erosion created 220 million years ago, when oceans covered the area.
Makhtesh Ramon a unique landform
Visiting the Ramon Crater can by as top on the journey through the Negev to witness the crater from above; or a longer visit to the area, to hike, drive or cycle through the makhtesh and appreciate the unique formations and flora and fauna that live here.

The only settlement in the area is the small town of Mitzpe Ramon, located on the northern edge of the depression. This is where the visitors center is located. It is actual gate to the Ramon Crater.
As the visitor ascends the ramp to the building, there are special floor to ceiling windows to look out to this natural marvel, with breathtaking views.
A film explains how the makhtesh was formed and a 3D interactive model helps bring home an understanding of the topography of this unique region. The visitors center personnel are able to provide information on trails and conditions within the makhtesh.

Wildlife in Ramon Crater
Bio Ramon is run by the Parks Authority, offering an amazing peek at the rare creatures that inhabit the Makhtesh. Bio Ramon has some 40 species of small desert creatures, as well as rodents, snakes, lizards, porcupines, turtles and scorpions. Guided tours are offered to all visitors. Its botanical-ecological garden presents six characteristic habitats including typical plants, landscapes and rock formations.
The Asian wild ass has been reintroduced to Makhtesh Ramon. In 1995 the population had increased to 40 adults in the area. The animals are hybrids of two different subspecies of the Asian Wild Ass. Mammals of the area include Nubian ibexes, Dorcas gazelles, striped hyenas and few Arabian leopards.

For those wishing to take their visit to an extra level, it is located in one of the most beautiful trails of makhtesh Ramon. Visitors may sleep either beneath the stars or in Bedouin hospitality tents, that include coffee, tea, pita bread as well as overnight stays.
