The Church of Transfiguration is located atop Mount Tabor in the Lower Galilee of the Holy Land. Mount Tabor is a remarkable site on the Bible, the place where Deborah and Barak fought the Canaanite.

As mentioned in the Gospels
The actual church was built in 1924 over the ruins of several churches built on the site since the 4th century.
It is the site where Jesus went through his transfiguration in front of his disciples Peter James and John, when the divine nature revealed and his face shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light while Jesus was speaking to Moses and Elijah.

The Current Church of Transfiguration
This Catholic Church is one of the most important ones in the Christian World. It was designed by renowned Italian architect Antonio Barluzzi whose name was also linked to the Church of the Beatitudes.
It was designed in a way that the light enters creating a radiant atmosphere of the Transfiguration. Above the altar is an impressive mosaic depicting Jesus, Moses and Elijah at the time of the Transfiguration.
Next to the church is located a Franciscan Monastery and a Greek Orthodox Church named after the Prophet Elijah.
From the Church itself you may have an amazing view of the Jezreel Valley to the south and west as well as the hills of the Galilee, being one of the most beautiful sites in the Holy Land of Israel.
The Greek Orthodox Church of the Transfiguration
Greek Orthodox and Catholic Churches
Currently there are two churches on the mountain, a Greek
Orthodox one, called the Church of St. Elias or Elijah and a Catholic one
called the Church of the Transfiguration, or the Church of the Savior.
The Catholic one is the larger of the two, with an impressive mosaic and chapels dedicated to Moses and Elijah. It was built on the site of earlier Byzantine and Crusader churches, parts of which are still visible. Also present is a cave said to have been the dwelling of St. Melchizedek, mentioned in Genesis, who dwelt there as a hermit for seven years.
Modernity allows visitors to drive close to the summit, but those looking for a little exercise, or perhaps a more genuine experience, may want to seek out one of the many hiking trails.

Time of the Crusaders
The church has three grottoes once described as three chapels representing the three huts that Peter wanted to build, one for Jesus and the other two for Moses and Elijah.
Two chapels are located on the two towers of the church, one is the Chapel of Elijah and the second the Chapel of Moses. Moses and Elijah are some of the main characters in Judaism.
You may visit this church every day from 8:00 am to 12:00 noon and 2:00 PM TO 7:00 PM.
