Conceived in America

It was conceived in 1950 by a group of Jewish Americans, and founded in 1955 by an American Rabbi Professor Pinkhos Churgin. It was described by the New York Times as an important link between the new State of Israel and the United States of America.

It was named after Rabbi Meir Bar Ilan (formerly Berlin) who served as an inspiration for the founding of this institution.

Even though he was an orthodox Rabbi, he believed that there is room for a University providing secular academic studies together with the religious Torah learning.

It has about 27,000 students including those of the affiliated colleges, and 1,400 faculty members

Its purpose is "To blend tradition with modern technologies and scholarship, and teach the compelling ethics of Jewish heritage to all... to synthesize the ancient and modern, the sacred and the material, the spiritual and the scientific”
